Superintendent Marlon Nesbeth, head of the St. Catherine South Police Division, is appealing for more police in the Old Harbour area of St. Catherine, and calling on residents to help the police in the anti-crime drive. He made the call while speaking recently at a community meeting at the Old Harbour Courthouse.

Old Harbour is home to an estimated 53,000 people, but only 35 police personnel are stationed at the town’s police station – a ratio of one cop to approximately 1,500 residents.

He said, “... with the best of intentions, there is a disparity between the police personnel and those they serve … we need all the cooperation we can get [from residents] to solve the crime problems in the Old Harbour communities.”

Nesbeth promised residents that the police would be doing all in their power to deal with matters at had, but noted the inadequate number of cops made the job tougher.

Angry residents in Old Harbour, St. Catherine, blocked roads and protested yesterday against what they claim was the ‘bully actions’ of the police when they attempted to arrest a man at a community fair on Sunday night.

It is alleged that the police went to the fair to arrest a man who they said was wanted for malicious destruction of property and unlawful wounding. They were reportedly however prevented from arresting the man by patrons who hurled stones and bottles at them, and as a result, the man escaped. A service vehicle was also damaged in the incident the police said.

The protesters on the other hand alleged that the police stormed the venue and opened fire indiscriminately, and so they (the residents) did in fact then prevent the police from carrying out the arrest.

During yesterdays protest action, eleven persons were arrested and charged with littering, after they allegedly participated in the blocking of the roads.

Kemsha Butler plead not guilty in the Old Harbour Resident Magistrate’s Court earlier this week, where he appeared on a charge of assault at common law for allegedly pulling a machete and threatening a female special constable. Butler reportedly accused the constable of collecting money for him and not handing it over, and pulled a machete and threatened her in the process. The matter was reported to the police and he was arrested.

In his defence in court, Butler alleged that the woman had actually defrauded him after he had given her permission to use his credit card. The incident occurred when he attempted to get back the money. His J$40K station bail was extended and the case adjourned until April 30 when it will be heard again.
