Clovis Makes Fun Of Former DCP Mark Shields

Former Deputy Commissioner of Police Mark Shields has been very vocal in recent times about the security forces’ recent battles with criminal elements in West Kingston and elsewhere across the island. In today’s Jamaica Observer newspaper, cartoonist Clovis’ pokes fun at Shields, basically implying that he didn’t do much before, and now has a lot of talk since he is no longer a member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

Ellington Gets Mark Shields’ Vote

Former Deputy Police Commissioner Mark Shields, who recently set up his own security consulting company here in Jamaica, is supporting Acting Police Commissioner Owen Ellington’s bid to succeed Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin as Police Commissioner of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

Shields told the Jamaica Observer newspaper recently that “I am absolutely delighted that Owen Ellington is likely to be the next Police Commissioner and I will be fully supporting him. I worked with him for almost five years and he is a first-class police officer who I would work with anywhere in the world,” … more here.

Today’s Gleaner Editorial Defends Jamaica’s Expat Cops

Today’s editorial in the Gleaner newspaper, comes to the defence of the British expat police here in Jamaica, stating – “It has become something of a national sport to suggest, cynically, that Jamaicans, including those who seriously thought about the issues, who welcomed Mark Shields, Les Green and Justin Felice, saw them as magicians who would mystically reform the constabulary. They seem to receive chest-thumping joy from being able to point to the mess that is still the JCF, and to feel vindicated that the imports made no difference,” – see the rest here.

Dear Editor,

One cannot fault persons for believing the “rumours” that Commissioner of Police Hardley Lewin had resigned. While the commissioner has speculated as to who such rumours could be attributed to, and their less than honourable motives, I wish to put forth a simpler, less sinister motive: the commissioner is no longer seen nor heard from at a time when crime remains our most pressing concern!

The only person within the JCF who seemingly realised the need for visible leadership, and who was willing and brave enough to be the “face” fighting crime was former DCP Mark Shields … more

Dear Editor,

The commissioner of police has asked that the contract for outgoing Deputy Commissioner of Police Mark Shields be extended for a further three months if reports I have seen and read are accurate.

Once his service to the JCF is up, I suggest that Mr Shields be asked to lead the private body that the Government has long been promising us to investigate police abuses because I agree that “police should not investigate police”.

This will be the clearest indication yet that this Government is serious about respecting the rights of its people, even when pitted against agents of the State … more

Mark Shields Gets Another Contract Extension

The controversial Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mark Shields, has reportedly been asked to further extend his contract with the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) for another three months.

His contract with the force as the deputy commissioner in charge of crime expired in February, and he was given a three month extension until May 31. Now he has reportedly been asked by Commissioner of Police Hardley Lewin to stay on for a further three months to focus on specialised assignments. He has agreed to stay on.

Notably, he has said that he has no intention to stay on longer than this three month extension which will expire at the end of August.

Mark Shields’ Contract Extended By 3 Months

As hinted here less than a week ago, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mark Shields is in fact staying with the Jamaica Constabulary Force for another three months. The contract extension announcement was made yesterday by Commissioner of Police – Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin – at a press conference.

During the three months, Shields will take on the police operations portfolio, acting in place of Assistant Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington who is abroad on a management course.

Mark Shields May Stay On A Few Months
