In today’s Gleaner newspaper, columnist Garth Rattray says that Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin was ‘hardley’ able to make a difference during his time as Commissioner of Police. He says, “And, if I knew Hardley as more than an acquaintance, I would have advised him to avoid the job at all costs because, given his personality, training and background, it would only frustrate him. Furthermore, the post has become one that is so answerable to and severely encumbered by politics that it has been significantly compromised. Today’s editorial in the Jamaica Gleaner newspaper – New JCF head must take the high road: We had hoped his recent denial that he would take up a job in Bermuda meant Hardley Lewin was in for the long haul as Jamaica’s commissioner of police.

Unfortunately, after only two years as police chief, Rear Admiral Lewin, a former chief of staff of the Jamaica Defence Force, has stepped down. Citing frustration with Jamaica’s high crime rate, Commissioner of Police, Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin, has reportedly resigned. He had held the position for approximately two years. There has been no official confirmation of his resignation at this time, and as recently as last week, Lewin has denied repeated rumors and claims that he was leaving the Jamaica Constabulary Force to take up a position with the police force in Bermuda.

Rumors That Prime Minister Golding Wants Lewin Out

According to a report in today’s Gleaner newspaper, there are persistent rumors and reports that the Government has lost confidence in Commissioner of Police Hardley Lewin, and wants a new commissioner named by the Police Service Commission (PSC).

There has been no official word from the Bruce Golding administration but sources point to a late-evening meeting involving the prime minister and PSC head, Professor Gordon Shirley, last week. The PSC also met with Lewin … more here.
