			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Today is the last official day in office for outgoing Commissioner of Police, Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin, and the Editorial in today&#8217;s Gleaner newspaper takes another look at his recent resignation.</p>
<p>It begins &#8230; &#8220;<em>Prime Minister Bruce Golding suggested in his statement to Parliament this week to have been as surprised as anyone at Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin&#8217;s resignation last weekend as Jamaica&#8217;s police chief.</p>
<p>Only days earlier, Mr Golding related, he and Mr Lewin met to discuss the state of crime in Jamaica and he had received no indication that the move was contemplated. <p>Unfortunately, after only two years as police chief, Rear Admiral Lewin, a former chief of staff of the Jamaica Defence Force, has stepped down. While the specific trigger for the decision has not been disclosed, it is widely known that he lacked the support of many members, including senior officers of the constabulary. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>According to a report in today&#8217;s Gleaner newspaper, there are persistent rumors and reports that the Government has lost confidence in Commissioner of Police Hardley Lewin, and wants a new commissioner named by the Police Service Commission (PSC).</p>
<p>There has been no official word from the Bruce Golding administration but sources point to a late-evening meeting involving the prime minister and PSC head, Professor Gordon Shirley, last week.
