Detective Constable Anthony Gayle, who was stationed at the Denham Town Police Station, and who attempted to rob an off-duty policewoman and a civilian of a motorcycle in 2007, appeared in the Supreme Court yesterday, where he was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. Gayle was actually sentenced to a total of 70 years in prison, but he will serve 20 years as the sentences are to run concurrently.

Gayle was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for illegal possession of ammunition, 20 years’ imprisonment for illegal possession of firearm, 20 years’ imprisonment for shooting with intent and 20 years imprisonment for attempted robbery.

The Court heard that in 2007, Gayle and a civilian went to St. Elizabeth and attempted to rob an off-duty policewoman and a civilian of a motorcycle. Gayle fired shots at the policewoman and the civilian while they were travelling on the Ballards Valley main road. The policewoman returned the fire and Gayle was shot. Gayle then went to the Junction Police Station in St. Elizabeth and reported that someone on a motorcycle shot and injured him.

The matter was investigated, and it was revealed that Gayle was shot during the attempted robbery and the car in which he was travelling was also damaged by the bullets. In his defence, Gayle denied committing the offences. The civilian who was travelling with Gayle is still being sought by the police.

The Sunday Observer sought a list of wanted policemen who seemed to have fled the jurisdiction, and got a list of 16 names from the JCF. They comprised cops accused of various crimes, including murder, who are yet to be brought to book.

Former head of the St Catherine North Police, Superintendent Harry ‘Bungles’ Daley, who was convicted in 2009 on corruption charges (and sentenced to 18 months in prison), has appealed his conviction, and on November 7 of this year the Court of Appeal will hear this appeal. Daley is being represented by top-flight attornies, Patrick Atkinson and Valerie Neita-Robertson, and is currently on bail pending the appeal.

During Daley’s trial, the prosecution led evidence that the former superintendent allegedly used his authority to bully the complainant, Tafari Clarke, into paying him $20,000 monthly as protection money (for a plaza in Ewarton St Catherine). Daley however claimed that the funds he collected were for a loan owed to him by Clarke’s father.

In handing down sentencing Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey had said the breach of Section 14 of the Corruption Prevention Act was grave and that the senior policeman had flagrantly abused his position.

49-year-old district constable, Irvin Codner, who was assigned to the Allman Town Police Station, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, where he was sentenced to six months in prison after he was convicted for soliciting $3,000 from a motorist who had disobeyed a traffic light.

The court heard that on August 13, 2010, a motorist broke the stop light on Oxford Road, and was pulled over by Codner who was travelling behind in a service vehicle. The activity was seen by members of the police’s Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) who just so happened to be outside their office right there on Oxford Road. Codner was observed collecting money from the motorist, who then drove off.

Members of the ACB reportedly chased and caught up with the motorist, who admitted during questioning that Codner had asked him for the money in order to avoid him issuing the traffic ticket. The service vehicle was subsequently traced to the Allman Town Police Station and Codner and a policeman, with whom he was travelling, were questioned. Codner, who was later identified by the motorist, was arrested and a file prepared for the Director of Public Prosecution who ruled that he be charged.

Yesterday in court, Codner was sentenced to six months each on charges of soliciting bribe and accepting bribe, however, the sentences will run concurrently.
