Pay Scales For Jamaica’s Police
Basic pay numbers for Jamaica’s police .. taken from a feature in today’s Jamaica Observer newspaper.
An entry-level police constable’s basic pay is $581,701 each year … $48,475 per month. They receive a housing allowance of $25,680 and get $13,270 for a set overtime period of 10 hours, which totals $87,425. Upper-level constables earn almost 10 per cent more.
At the top of the officer class — excluding the ranks of commissioner and deputy commissioner which are contracted posts — assistant commissioners at the top of the scale for that category moved from $4.7 million on April 1, 2008 to $6.27 million in basic salary last year, an increase of 33 per cent, or more than $1.5 million. Over the same period, those at the bottom of the scale moved from $4.06 million to $5.27 million, an increase of 30 per cent.
Deputy commissioners earn in the region of $6.5 million while the commissioner is paid between $8 and $10 million per annum.

Dear SIrs
I a Ph. D student with a Masters’ and Bachelors’ degree.
Why should a Deputy Commissioner who has a passing ability to use the English Language and get almost J$7 million dollars?

it is really so sad that someone could post such a comment re: y should a commissioner get so much money despite being under qualified i appreciate the response he received…well said….i want to also add that qualification or the lack thereof does not make u more or less of a man competent in all respects….might i also add that sometimes we learn more through experience than through formal education and in addition to that…..have u ever considered the risks involved as well as the high level of responsibility of a commissioner? come on right about now u sound really uneducated

Ph.D dont mean much these days, look what Dr. Clueless with his Ph.D did with our economy.I dont pay people for what they have on paper, I pay for what they can do.Look here, take this present Commish for example and the ones before him with all sort of degrees and what we get, crime going up daily.

I am interested in joining the police force. However, I have just completed my first degree and is contemplating on doing my bachelors. What do you think I should do?
said on June 9th, 2011 at 7:31 am
Please note: Possession of a Masters does NOT automatically deem you capable of carrying out a particular task /function. There are several aspect of any field of work that require vast amounts of practical knowlegde aquired only through years of on the job experience. Masters… Hah. Try waving your masters at the enemy when your commading 50 troops whilst under fire in West Kingston. lol. I am deeply embarrased by your lack of understanding and respect for experience and would expect that some one with your level of so called ‘education’ would understand such a matter. Please try enrolling in the school of hard knocks. I have never heard of a Commercial Airline Pilot be offered a job because he/she possesses a Ph.D in history, it simply is not relivant. A job of such requires thousands of hours flight time and is far more instrumental than any form of paperwork.
I sincerley hope you do not take offence by my posting and remain capable of constructing a rational response to my comment.

As with all job interviews knowledge of the job description is paramount what do you have to offer the organization and what are your intentions. What implementations would you apply to increase the efficiency of the JCF…

absolute rubbish, just because u know how to swat and do research u think ur more capable, well judging by ur inability to notice the importance of police in our society ur definately useless. Our goverment is now realising the importance of providing good salaries for people who have such huge responsibilities on their shoulders, ur just jealous, idiot! No offence

I did the police recruit test and was called for an assesment in my assesment group there
Were 13 persons present four of whom had BSc’s and one with a first degree
And all of them failed a simple reasoning session. Fyi qualifications only puts you on a level
Playing field, if 10 individuals all with Phd’s were in an interview who would get the job?

I was a Police Officer and a good one by far, worked Spanish Town, Bog walk Ewarton and rode bike/traffic with Adams. They used to call me “shaft”…Let me explain something to you, the only crime fighting knowledge and proper police methodologies and crime investigation that majority of the force knows is “brutality” and “brute-force”. Some of them is as dumb as a bat. You are all jealous of people with a good and invaluable education, if it is so easy to get why dont you go and get one. Let me tell you something any person with a Bachelor degree in any discipline can run the police force with just six weeks crash course.
What the police in Jamaica lacks, all of them combine is International experience, to fight crime in present day- – you need technology, coupled with education and practical crime detection methods. I agree that the salary is low for the police and that they could be better so should the teachers and nurses – The government both PNP and JLP is doing a dis-service to Jamaica. Also – I do have all those degrees myself and i could run Jamaica better than both the JLP and PNP, if i was in charge of Jamaica there would never be so much crime and “Don’s” and “Garrison Cities”, I gurantee you that if a man drop his wallet in Kingston or Tivoli – they who find it, would take same to the police station and turn it in, all burglar bars would come down from all homes and Jamaica would enjoy the security that the rest of the world would envy. Trust me , i could accomplish it and its very easy to do…Why? Because the people whom runs Jamaica now has no National and International experience and sufficient knowledge to run an establishment. How can someone walk into a police station and shoot someone and walk out – thats ludacrous, every station should have cameras internet base and computers, not station Diary..Please, i laugh at the technology that the police uses- – all they – the government depends on is “big guns” that cannot fight or curb crime, the government must stop being a puppet to other countries, ask your self this question “is jamaica independent?” again, the entire Police force needs overall – and i also know Mr Ellengtion.

I honestly thing the police paid is too much for their incompetence in their duty. I also think that they would perform better duty if more of them was educated….. growing up in the inner city i can contest that most of the police are down right idiots, uneducated fools..period. and i will even go further to say that most of them are criminals trying to arrest criminals..lol aint that something. the qualification need to be higher, you have uneducated idiots coming out of school with 3 -4 CXC with all grades three and hardly can read these are people that are entering the FORCE annually. ppl with higher education would not dare to go in the FORCE unless they are FORCE in!

i have read ur postings and the one that struck me most declared that policemen r uneducated. I am interested in joining the force as i have seen that there is change being implemented, being educated should be mandatory for all jamaicans no matter the endevour they persue but we must realise the importance of law enforcer’s in this country. Providing a good salary for our police men and women should not be frowned upon as this may help to alleviate corruption. Also the academic requirements are almost on par with university requirements now so i think the quality of individuals may also be better, but we must remember that being educated can also make people more corrupt and greedy therefore we also need moral and cultural intervention!

its such a pity that that individual….who writes as “roast egg”…..is behaving like the boor he really is…he is suppose to be educated enough ..not to go to the low depraved level he has..he is just showing the true nature of himself…a being from the deepest darkest recesses of humanity….a degree cannot prove your true capability…you can take a pig out of the mud but you cannot get rid of it”s true nature…it will still be a pig….auf wiedersehen roast egg…you need god in your life…you are deserving of pity

stop player hating the security forces for there salary because some of you will not do some of the things they face on a day to day basics so just shut up and help us to make this island a safer place to live in………

There are some really good response to this Phd. idiot. I left the force as at the rank of Corporal while at Planning and Research at Duke Street. I now hold a MBA from a Jesuit University also completed post graduate studies in finance and have worked at some of the largest financial institutions in the US as a Financial Analyst. I would like to tell Mr. Phd. that the knowledge and education that you obtain in the police force in Jamaica surpasses you Ph.d. After graduating from training and working for two years the police can go and get a Ph.d and will be twice as smart as you. THEY DESERVE EVERY PENNY THEY EARN.

I am here reading the comments that were made Re: The pay package for Law Enforcers, and I am extremely surprised; not on the grounds of the Law Enforcers pay package, but, at the illiteracy of those who are labeling the Officers of the state as Illiterate.
Firstly, one might have the highest level of qualification in this world, as I have seen above and is somewhat illiterate or entirely. Not that i am saying that the entire force is equipped properly where education is concerned, but the fact is that one doesn’t need a Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s or PhD to fight crime. Therefore, once a person is competent to carry out his/her duties professionally and is knowledgeable of the field, then then he/she should be allowed to do so upon his/her interest.
Secondly, most of the above notes that I have read where people are implying that most of the Law Enforcers are illiterate show that they, themselves, are not literate. But as my late Grandmother used to say, “Pluck the matta out a yuh eye before yuh pluck it out a somebody else’s eye.”
Thirdly, I think the problem that is affecting the Police Force is the level of “CORRUPTION” which the hierarchy are working to negate.
Finally, I think that those persons that are putting their lives on the line to make sure that mine and others are preserved can never be paid enough from my perspective. my only wish today is to see an immense or full drop in the level of Police Brutality and Police Corruption.

Fitzy P.
Question, what is the difference a first degree & a BSC. I thought they were the same diploma.

@ roastegg
You are just a pretentious wannabe; you have never been a member of the security forces. You come with all your fictional information about you working with Mr. Adams and how you were called Shaft; there has NEVER been anyone who worked with Mr. Adams by that name. Furthermore there has never been anyone in the St. Catherine North division by that alias. Stop pretending; if you want to lash out at the police then be who you really are and stop hiding behind your momma’s skirt. You are another of those sore losers who try to hate the police.

First of all, all you educated DUNCE in above need to shut the * up ok. You have street smart and you have book smart. You all are imposing on a better education in the JDF/JCF as if its going help alleviate crime and violence. You’re going to listen to me and listen to me carefully, Am a past resident of the Tivoli Garden Community who endorse high society and its knowledge of intelligence and what it has to offer, But A police/soldier who has obtained a Diploma, Degree, Masters or a PHD and/or comes from Cherry Garden or Forrest Hill who has no knowledge about hardship and garrison life cannot relate to a person or his situation understandingly. So therefore I think the force need more strong minded persons who wants to serve and protect jamaica with or without qualification and not coming forward to highlight that they have a degree or PHD “QUALIFICATIONS” to get a position or earn $200k per month ie. You’re in it for your fortune and not the love and so it will definitely goes right back to corruption in the JDF/JCF. Most of who has reached the stardom level of academics “QUALIFICATIONS” are always selfish and think they’re above others who they think are below them so tell me now has to how your going to send them in the inner city to deal with people who are less fortunate and who they’re going to think that they are above? Hmm? But guess what? All you fools who thinks that the well educated persons who are entering the JCF/JDF will make a difference in it let’s see yea. They’re just going to go in it to intelligently mash up JA with there intelligence and even try to out smart the god damn Governor General himself in dew time, (unuh watch n si) you narrow minded fuckas “Bex nuh *”.

Hi all educated and uneducated. It was qiute interesting what you all had to say.
I know that a good education is important regardless your occupation and it should work in tangent with your work experience.
Therefore, being exposed to a work is critical to your professional development.
Police should be paid base on their performance

being a police is a very stressful job at any rank and comes with great personal risk and sacrifice, so i say pay them well so they wont have to take bribes. on the flip side though its very funny to know that the commissioner make at least 4 million more than his boss the minister of national security and 1.5 million more than the prime minister. lol
