Residents Block Roads & Protest Police Shooting In Tucker, St. James

Angry residents reportedly used large rocks and debris to mount roadblocks along the roadway in the community of Tucker in St. James yesterday, a day after the police shot dead two young men who they alleged had engaged them in a firefight. The two men, who were said to be friends, were identified as 19-year-old Davion Haughton, also called ‘Silence’ and 18-year-old Kenroy Brown otherwise known as ‘Kino’, both from Tucker, St. James. Two police officers were reportedly shot and injured during the incident which occured on Friday night (June 11).

According police reports, at approximately 11 p.m. on Friday, a police team was patrolling a section of the Tucker community when they observed a group of three men, who immediately sped off into nearby bushes. The police allege that the fleeing men came upon another group of policemen who were on foot patrol, and a gun battle ensued. When the shooting ended, it was discovered that two members of the police party, along with Brown and Haughton had sustained gunshot injuries. Brown and Haughton were subsequently pronounced dead at hospital.

The police have also reported that a third man escaped, and that they recovered a .38 revolver.

Residents (including family members of the dead men) are however claiming that both men were innocent.
