Policeman Interdicted For Fatal Shooting

The policeman who was reportedly involved in Saturday (April 3) night’s fatal shooting of Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) employee Everton Parchment, was interdicted yesterday, pending an internal investigation. Acting Commissioner of Police, Owen Ellington, made the disclosure today, indicating that the decision to interdict was made after reviewing the contents of a preliminary report which was done by the Bureau of Special Investigation (BSI). He said also however, that he will also seek a ruling from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

According to reports, Parchment was shot in the neck during a spot check on Spanish Town Road while returning home from a wedding in which he served as the best man. He died shortly after 12:00 am Easter Sunday at the Kingston Public Hospital.

His death sparked widespread condemnation from members of the public, and Acting Commissioner Ellington described the killing “as tragic and regrettable and one which raises concerns about how the operation was conducted“.
