$7 Million Award For Man Who Was Shot, Beaten & Arrested By Police

33 year old Devon White, of a Brown’s Town, St. Ann address, was recently awarded a total of $7 million in a civil lawsuit against the police, who reportedly “broke” into his shop in May 2000, and took away his goods, before shooting him in the hand and breaking both his legs. He was also arrested and charged with shooting with intent, shop-breaking and larceny, but these charges were dismissed in 2002, and he subsequently filed the civil suit.

After the incident, White reportedly spent 14 days in the hospital, and has since been unable to ply his trade (mason and higgler) to support his children who are 12, nine and five-years-old. He was awarded $4.5 million in damages for pain and suffering, over $1.5 million for false imprisonment; $380,000 for malicious prosecution and $600,000 in exemplary damages. The award was made by Justice Jennifer Straw several months ago, but was finalized recently.
