R.I.P. Inspector Joseph Vaughn
A thanksgiving service for Inspector Joseph Vaughn (of the Mandeville Police Station who died in a motor vehicle accident on September 26, 2009), was held recently at the St. Marks’ Anglican Church in Mandeville, Manchester. When his young son, Joseph Vaughan Jr. stepped to the podium to deliver a tribute to his late father, many of those in attendance were reportedly moved to tears. Young Vaughan also fought hard to keep his emotions in check, as he spoke in a soft voice.
“My dad is a rose that lasts throughout the years. A rose that never lost a petal. I will never forget the memories of you holding my hand. I love you dad,” he said.
In eulogizing his colleague, Superintendent Howard Francis (head of the Manchester Division) described Vaughan as a dedicated policeman who took his job seriously. “Joseph was a hard working, knowledgeable and well-grounded individual,” Francis said.
Vaughan’s relative, Marcia Palmer, described the late policeman as an avid sports fan who particularly liked climbing coconut trees. “There wasn’t a coconut tree he couldn’t conquer,” she said.
Vaughan was 48 years old at the time of his passing, and served the constabulary in the Manchester division. He also served the constabulary in the Westmoreland and St. James divisions. He had been a policeman for 28 years.
Vaughan’s remains were interred in a family plot at Old England in Manchester.
