Anti-Police Protests In Old Harbour Yesterday

Angry residents in Old Harbour, St. Catherine, blocked roads and protested yesterday against what they claim was the ‘bully actions’ of the police when they attempted to arrest a man at a community fair on Sunday night.

It is alleged that the police went to the fair to arrest a man who they said was wanted for malicious destruction of property and unlawful wounding. They were reportedly however prevented from arresting the man by patrons who hurled stones and bottles at them, and as a result, the man escaped. A service vehicle was also damaged in the incident the police said.

The protesters on the other hand alleged that the police stormed the venue and opened fire indiscriminately, and so they (the residents) did in fact then prevent the police from carrying out the arrest.

During yesterdays protest action, eleven persons were arrested and charged with littering, after they allegedly participated in the blocking of the roads.
