Italian Professor Has Problem With Noise & The Jamaican Police

Check out this recent complaint letter:

I have a problem and it’s the police. I don’t know if you can help with that, but I am sure you may be able to give me some useful suggestions.

I am a professor of American Literature in Italy and married to a Jamaican. We have been living in Portland for six months and a year, since 2001, and for the most of the time spent in this beautiful island I have been harassed by the problem of loud music (sound systems playing any time of the day, sometimes Monday to Saturday). The police have refused to deal with complaints about the loud music.

My latest problem is a bar, some 60 metres from my nearest window that recently reopened under new management. Before, it wasn’t a problem because even if they played music from time to time, it was perfectly fine with me as it was occasional. Since it reopened, they have made noise from morning till night, everyday with music and shouts and the endless cursing of drunk patrons. Even if the music is low, I hear a loud boom-boom from the boom box that reaches every part of my house and garden.

The police have refused to do anything as they say the bar has a simple stereo. They say that when I call them to complain, I am telling lies. You should hear the noise the “simple stereo” makes.

I talked to the new superintendent of the Port Antonio Police, but so far I have not seen any improvement in the situation. I feel tired, worried and full of distrust.
