Police Involved In Stolen Vehicle Racket?
Speaking yesterday at a meeting of the National Integrity Action Forum (NIAF) at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Minister of Finance Audley Shaw disclosed that staff member at the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) is now facing criminal charges for her alleged role in providing registration papers for what is believed to be a police-operated motor vehicle stealing racket.
As he made the disclosure, Minister Shaw painted a picture of widespread corruption in the country’s tax collection and customs departments as well as within the police force itself. “The corruption runs throughout the economy like a virus. It is pervasive, it is invasive and it is destructive,” he said.
He however expressed optimism that if the private sector and government departments worked together, the corruption problem could eventually be defeated.
