Golding Says The Police Commissioner Needs More Power
Addressing the Island Special Constabulary Force Association (ISCFA) annual conference in Ocho Rios yesterday, Prime Minister Bruce Golding said the commissioner of police needs to be given more authority to dismiss members of the force who are found to be involved in corrupt or criminal activities.
His statement comes in light of recent situations with regard to alleged corrupt police officers where the Commissioner could only make recommendations to the Police Services Commission that they be retired or dismissed. Similarly, at this time, the Commissioner does not have the power to interdict police officers at the rank of Inspector and higher. This is solely the purvey of the Police Services Commission.
Prime Minister Golding said that the government and the opposition have already commenced a process of review of the Constabulary Force Act and that they would be pushing for greater powers to be given to the commissioner. He also said that the commissioner should be given certain powers which would allow him to take action against corrupt cops.
