District Constable Gets 3 Years In Prison For Shooting
District Constable Michael Bernard was sentenced last week in the Westmoreland Circuit Court to three years in prison for a 2006 shooting incident which left a man injured.
The complainant – Lloyd Clarke – was reportedly walking on Barclay Street, Savanna-la-Mar, when he was shot in the back and right elbow by one or other of three policemen. The shooter was later identified as Bernard. His spinal cord was completely severed which caused complete paralysis from the waist down and medical evidence revealed that he will never be able to work again as a mason, and is totally dependent on someone to help with his personal hygiene. In December of last year, he was awarded a record J$40 million in damages settlement by the Supreme Court – one of the highest ever in a personal injury suit against the state.
With regard to the criminal case, District Constable Bernard recently pleaded guilty to the charge of wounding with intent and was sentenced last week Thursday (June 4).
