Commissioner’s Hands Tied?

Today’s editorial in the Jamaica Observer newspaper requests that the powers that be ensure that the Police Commissioner’s hands are not tied.

The position being advocated by Prime Minister Bruce Golding that the commissioner of police needs to be equipped with more authority to dismiss members of the constabulary found guilty of corrupt or criminal activities is sound.

In fact, this proposal has had our support since the 1990s when the then police commissioner, Mr Francis Forbes, put it on the table as he grappled with these problems inside the police force.

Recent events involving members of the constabulary have reignited this discussion. We speak here of the 10 cops who were implicated in the lottery scam that has spawned many murders and who Police Commissioner Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin last week recommended be retired in the public interestmore
