Lewin Attempts To Clarify Statement

Police Commissioner Hardley Lewin has attempted to clarify comments relating to work and religion/worship that he made at Thursday’s session of the Police Federation Conference, and which has caused an uproar among members of the constabulary as well as the wider public.

Before a large audience that was attending Security Minister Dwight Nelson’s National Consultation on Crime at the Montego Bay Civic Centre, Lewin, in response to a request from the floor to explain his comments, said: “I’m very happy to repeat what I said. The words Seventh-day Adventist were not uttered from these lips. I said to everyone there, if your religion conflicts with your policing duties, leave the police force. I went further to say, imagine some other groupings who say they are moon worshippers and they worship on a Tuesday, and the sun worshippers worship on a Wednesday, who is going to do the policing? And then I said, this is not an opportunity for supervisors or leaders to be vindictive and to roster people on the day they know they regularly worship, but this is not an excuse for you not to do your fair share of the load and that’s what I said.
