Retired Policeman Murdered
70 year old retired police sergeant Balvie Williams was shot dead by men believed to be robbers in the Red Bank housing scheme at Hatfield (just west of Mandeville) late Wednesday evening (April 8).
According to police reports, Williams was traveling in a taxi from Fairfield Mountain towards Mandeville, when another male passenger asked the driver for a “short stop” in the Red Bank housing scheme. The driver complied and two men approached the car with guns. The passenger who had requested the diversion alighted from the car and he too produced a gun which was aimed at the driver. Williams, while seated in the front passenger seat, reportedly became involved in a struggle with the other two men.
The taxi driver then drove away, but the gunmen fired shots through the rear windscreen and Williams was hit. He was taken to the Mandeville Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

I have worked alongside sgt. Williams for a number of years and considered him a social genius who have never stepped over the line of abuse, he certainly deserved better. My sincere condolences.
