Policemen Arrested On Suspicion of Corruption
Two policemen were arrested recently, in separate incidents, on reasonable suspicion for breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act of 2000.
Constable Jason Powell of the St. Andrew Central Police Division is alleged to have solicited the sum of J$100,000 from a man who was the subject of a blackmail complaint. Constable Powell alleged solicited the money in order for him to not put the case before the court. A report was made to the Anti-Corruption Branch and a sting operation was set up; Constable Powell was held as he collected the sum of J$50,000.
Constable Willard Williamson of the Westmoreland Police Division is alleged to have solicited the sum of J$15,000 in order to get rid of a summons that had been served on the complainant for breaches of the Road Traffic Act. The Anti-Corruption Branch of the police received information about the payment arrangements and a sting operation was carried out; Williamson was held after collecting the money.
