Mobay Fake Cop Case Takes Dramatic Twist
The Montego Bay fake cop case has taken a new, dramatic twist, as Commissioner of Police Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin announced yesterday that 18 policemen from the Mount Salem police station have been interdicted and taken off front line duties, as the Anti-Corruption Branch of the police have been investigating and now alleging that that corrupt police officers had “deliberately recruited” and planted the fake cop at the Mount Salem Police Station. This, as part of the widespread multi-million dollar on-going lotto scams in Montego Bay.
At a Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) press conference at the Courtleigh Hotel in New Kingston yesterday, Lewin said, “In the case under question, he never tricked the system, but through deliberate action on the part of police officers in St James, deliberate action on their part, he was recruited and incorporated into their illicit activities connected with the lotto scam. “The wrongdoers planted him in and among them, working in concert with him. He was part and parcel of the illicit operation. As a consequence of our investigations, I have interdicted from duty two sergeants, one corporal, 11 constables (and) four district constables. There is one inspector whose interdiction is being pursued through the appropriate channels. I have no power to interdict inspectors and above, but that is being pursued through the appropriate channels.”
Lewin said the corrupt police recruited Courtney Grayson and used him to shake down players involved in the lotto scam which police say pulls in US$30 million annually. He said the police high command discovered that there was more to Grayson’s case than met the eye, and thus a sting operation was set up.
Lewin said the policemen had likely arrested Grayson after the recent arrest of a major player in the lotto scam who the cops thought could have implicated them and attempted to cover their tracks by ripping out pages from a station diary which showed the times when Grayson was issued with two .38 revolvers. He added “Several pages have been torn from the records and I presume destroyed. But, they didn’t work quite fast enough, because we copied them. So we have copies of those records that have been seized.” Lewin said the removal of corrupt policemen from the ranks of the constabulary was among his top priorities and added “I wish to assure the public that we are cleaning house, whatever it takes to do so,” said Lewin, who indicated that additional cops had been re-deployed to the Mount Salem police station.
