Man Fined For Assaulting District Constable

Errol ‘Mitty’ Rowe of Rivoli in St. Catherine was fined J$5,000 when he appeared in court for assaulting a district constable who had reprimanded him for smoking ganja. He had been arrested and charged with seven counts including smoking ganja, disorderly conduct, using abusive and indecent language, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, failing to give name and address and threatening a police officer. He pleaded guilty to all charges except the one for threatening a police officer.

The prosecution withdrew the charge of smoking ganja, and he was convicted on the other five counts and ordered to pay a fine of J$1,000 each, or serve 50 days in prison (10 days on each charge).

In his defence, Rowe told the lay magistrates that he did not know that the District Constable was a police officer, as he did not identify himself as such. He said also that the constable “never talk to me wid courtesy”.
