Controversial Police Shooting in Westmoreland

A 25-year-old taxi operator Rolando Crooks was shot and killed yesterday, reportedly by members of the Police’s Joint Task Force team who, acting on intelligence, went in search of Crooks at his home in Lennox Bigwoods. The police allege that they were greeted with gunfire at his residence, and that during a firefight Crooks was fatally shot. A .38 revolver loaded with three live rounds was allegedly recovered from him.

Residents of the area however are insisting that Crooks was shot in cold blood, and they mounted a massive fiery demonstration in Darliston (a community that neighbors Lennox Bigwoods) to show their disapproval of the police’s report of the shooting incident. They set fire to an old motor car, which was placed in front of the Darlsiton Police station. They also used debris to block the main road.

According to some residents, Crooks came outside his house when the police called him, and that the policemen simply opened fire on him at that point. They say he was then dragged into one of the police vehicles. Police officers who were on duty at the Darliston Police station fired shots in the air, as the angry mob started to throw stones at the station.

Luther Buchanan, Member of Parliament for Eastern Westmoreland, has reportedly called for a full investigation of the incident by the police’s Bureau of Special Investigations.
