3 Policemen to be Charged for Death of Deejay’s Son
Three policemen from the Kingston Central Police Station are to be charged in connection with the shooting death of dancehall deejay Spragga Benz’s son (Carlton Grant Jr.) in August of this year. Two are to be charged with murder, and the third is to be charged with assault. The Director of Public Prosecutions, Paula Llewellyn, has made this ruling on a case that has been controversial since it happened on the evening of August 23, 2008.
According to the official report, the policemen responded to a report about a woman being robbed by two armed men on a bicycle in Downtown Kingston. Two men (one of them being Grant) were spotted on a bicycle and instructed to stop. They did, but the police alleged that one of them pulled a gun and fired at them. They fired back, and Grant was later found suffering from gunshot wounds. A pistol was allegedly taken off him.
The police’s Bureau of Special Investigation was called in immediately to probe the shooting, as contrary to the official police report on the matter, residents and eyewitnesses claim that there was no shootout, and that Grant had both hands in the air while being approached by the police, and was killed in cold blood.
